the village
Auribeau is a small picturesque village perched on the side of the Luberon mid-height between Apt and Mourre Nègre, highest point of the Luberon. Located 9 kms from Apt sub-prefecture in the department of Vaucluse, Provence, one reaches it via Saignon by a country road. The source of the Aiguebrun emerges from the area. The existing village dates from 1530.
The commune accounts for a population of 65 people, incorporating those living in the village and in the area surrounding. Two families have been in the locality for several generations. Most of the inhabitants have originated from other areas of France or elsewhere in Europe. The community council is composed of nine people including a mayor and two assistants.
The economy is based on agriculture, particularly lavender, cherries and the production of honey. Recent times have witnessed the introduction of a sculptor's workshop, an Internet agency and a 'gîte d'étape' : Le Moulin (http://www.moulindesfondons.com) .
